Genetics
- no genetic basis established
Diagnostic criteria
1 of 3 criteria:
- > 5 histologically identified hyperplastic polyps or serrated adenomas proximal to the sigmoid colon
- 2 of these polyps must be > 10 mm in diameter
- >= 1 hyperplastic polyp or serrated adenomas proximal to the sigmoid colon in an individual with at least 1 1st degree relative with hyperplastic polyps
- > 20 hyperplastic polyps or serrated adenomas distributed throughout the colon[2]
Diagnostic procedures
- colonoscopy surveillance yearly[2]
Complications
- increased risk of colon carcinoma
- no increased risk of extra-intestinal cancer
- mean age of colon cancer diagnosis is 56 years[2]
- incidence of colon cancer during 5 year follow-up is 7%[2]
