Introduction

inflammation of the hip

Coxitis fugax is also known as transient synovitis

Etiology

• any viral infection

Clinical manifestations

• cases occur during or after an extraarticular viral infection
  • often follows a mild upper respiratory infection
• pain in the hip, thigh, groin or knee on the affected side
• afrebrile

Laboratory

• complete blood count (CBC)
• erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) generally normal

Differential diagnosis

• reactive arthritis

Management

• rest
• non-weight bearing
• analgesics (NSAIDS) as needed
• recovery generally occurs within 6 weeks
