Introduction
reduction product of galactose[2]
Pathology
- in people with galactokinase deficiency, excess galactitol forms in the ocular lens leading to cataracts[2]
- the other common galactose metabolism defect is a defect in galactose-1-phosphate uridylyltransferase (autosomal recessive) which also causes a buildup of galactitol as a result of increased concentrations of galactose-1-phosphate & galactose resulting in hepatosplenomegaly, mental retardation & cataracts[2]
