iliac vein compression syndrome; May-Thurner syndrome

Epidemiology
- patients typically present in their 3rd, 4th, or 5th decade,
- female preponderance, with a 2:1 ratio
Pathology
- compression of the left iliac vein by the overlying right iliac artery
- left common iliac vein is most affected,
- left external iliac vein less commonly affected
- right iliac vein compression has also been described
Clinical manifestations
- repeated occurrence of deep vein thrombosis involving veins in the proximal left leg
Radiology
- ultrasonography imaging modality of choice
- angiography
- magnetic resonance imaging
