Flex, ABduct, & Externally Rotate (FABER) test

Indications

• hip pain
• sacroiliitis
• greater trochanteric pain syndrome

Procedure

• Flex, ABduct, & Externally Rotate hip
  • either hip is flexed, abducted & externally rotated with downward pressure to the knee reproducing the pain

Interpretation

• hip pain or limited range of motion consistent with sacroiliitis
• buttock pain suggets sacroiliac joint dysfunction
• groin pain suggest intra-articular hip joint cause of pain
• lateral hip pain suggests greater trochanteric pain syndrome
