Etiology
- repeated trauma or pressure
Pathology
- ingrowth of the nail plate into the proximal nail fold
- repetitive injury to the nail matrix may disrupt nail growth & alignment, with formation of new nail plates beneath the original plate,
Clinical manifestations
- characteristic appearance of multilayered nail plate stacking
- in acute retronychia, proximal nail fold inflammation is typically present,
- in chronic retronychia, inflammation is often mild or absent
