Etiology

• arthritis
  • tuberculous arthritis
    • other infectious arthritis
  • rheumatoid arthritis
• chronic synovitis
• chronic bursitis

Pathology

• multiple small loose bodies resembling polished grains of rice
• found in synovial fluid or bursae
• may represent shedding of infarcted synovium with encasement by fibrin
• cartilage-like appearance

Radiology

• magnetic resonance imaging: T1 isointense, T2 hypointense
