Introduction

A sac-like structure lined by synovial cells which serve to reduce the friction that arises from motion between facial planes. Over 100 bursae are found in the human body which tend to overly bony prominences where muscle or tendons pass. The bursae are generally named for the structures with which they are associated. Fluid obtained from bursae generally has a low cell count with a predominance of monocytes.
