Indications
- screening for hepatitis C infection
Principle
Tests for antibodies to HCV antigens.
2nd generation testing (available in 1993) incorporates more antigens than 1st generation test.
Insensitive for detection of acute HCV.
False positives:
- autoimmune hepatitis
- disorders associated with hypergammaglobulinemia
Use in combination with:
- hepatitis C virus recombinant immunoblot assay (RIBA)
- hepatitis C virus RNA by RT-PCR (viral load_
- bDNA assays
