Indications
- evaluation of viral infection with cytomegalovirus
Clinical significance
- an immunosuppressed renal transplant patient with a positive titer for cytomegalovirus IgG in serum who presents with dysphagia & odynopaghia most likely has CMV esophagitis
- a negative cytomegalovirus IgG in serum renders CMV infection unlikely
- CMV infection is generally due to reactivation of latent virus
