Indications
- evaluation of carcinoid tumor
Reference interval
- 2-9 mg/24 hours (10-47 umol/24 hours)
Clinical significance
- sensitive & specific for carcinoid
Increases
- seen in carcinoid syndrome
Specimen
- 24 hour urine
- 48 hours before undergoing 5-HIAA urine collection, patients should avoid foods rich in 5-HT (bananas, avocados, grapefruit, tomatoes, eggplant, hickory nuts, walnuts)[3]
