Indications

• inherited mitochondrial disease in women (Leigh syndrome)

Procedure

• the nucleus of a donor egg is removed
• the nucleus from the mother's egg is placed into the donor egg
• the father's sperm fertilizes the egg, which contains the mother's nuclear DNA & the donor's mitochondrial DNA
• the fertilized egg is then implanted in the mother
