Pathology
- tooth extraction socket soft tissue generally heals in < 1 month
- the socket bone heals within 6 months
- healing may be slower in older patients
- diabetes mellitus may impair tooth extraction socket healing in the elderly
- an open tooth extraction socket for > 6 months is pathological
Complications
- osteonecrosis of the jaw is a concern if the patient is receiving a bisphosphonate (especially intravenous)
