- diminished heart rate variability is associated with increased cardiovascular risk[1]
Physiology
- heart rate variabilty is a measure of cardiac autonomic function[1]
- heart rate in normal individuals under complete autonomic blockade is 100 beats/min[1]
- higher resting heart rate & lower heart rate variability are associated with functional decline in older adults[2]*
* due to age-associated changes in the autonomic nervous system
Management
- exercise improves heart rate variability, regardless of age[1]
- maximum heart rate may be refractory to exercise
