FDA proposed changes to format of Nutrition Facts on food labels*

  • inclusion of 'Added Sugars' to the 'Total Carbohydrates
  • serving sizes more in line with how much people actually eat
  • separation of 'per serving' & 'per package' information for larger packages
  • mandatory inclusion of potassium & vitamin D content
  • removal of 'Calories from Fat' (reasoning is that the type of fat is more significant than the amount)
  • much larger fonts for calorie and serving size information

* Applies to all packaged foods except some meat, poultry, & processed egg products (overseen by the Department of Agriculture)
