- in reference to functional groups on the opposite side of a plane that includes two covalently bonded carbon atoms
In biochemistry:
- a prefix to a group name in the name of an enzyme or enzymatic reaction denoting transfer of that group from one molecule to another, i.e. transaminase (transfers an amine)
In genetics:
- in reference to genes on the opposite chromosome of a homologous pair
