Indications

• blood glucose monitoring (diabetes mellitus)

Procedure

• a mild electrical current is applied for 10 minutes
• this pulls Na+ from the skin's interstitial fluid toward the electrodes
• the Na+ ions allegedly carry glucose molecules
• a sensor in the tattoo assesses the electrical charge produced by the movement of Na+ (& glucose)
• combines reverse iontophoretic extraction of interstitial glucose & an enzyme-based amperometric biosensor
