Indications
- blood glucose monitoring (diabetes mellitus)
Procedure
- a mild electrical current is applied for 10 minutes
- this pulls Na+ from the skin's interstitial fluid toward the electrodes
- the Na+ ions allegedly carry glucose molecules
- a sensor in the tattoo assesses the electrical charge produced by the movement of Na+ (& glucose)
- combines reverse iontophoretic extraction of interstitial glucose & an enzyme-based amperometric biosensor
