Introduction
In 1990, the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) ended lifelong certification by initiating a 10-year Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program that first took effect in 2000.[1] nternists with time-unlimited certificates to are encouraged by ABIM to recertify.
Notes
- benefits unclear[1]
- no difference between physicians with lifelong certification & 10-year limited certification in 10 primary care performance measures[1]
- recertification may lower total healthcare costs (3%)[1]
- estimated average cost of $24,000 for each physician over 10 years[2]; cost effectiveness is unclear
- cost-benefit balance in question[3]
- internists who maintain certification have slightly better (statistically significant) performance scores than those that do not maintain certification[4]
