Etiology
- macroglossia (Down syndrome)
- retrognathia (Pierre Robin syndrome, Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome)
- neuromuscular disease
Pathology
- downward displacement or retraction of the tongue
- the tongue may be moved posteriorly during sleep against the posterior pharynx, resulting in airway obstruction & oxygen desaturation
