Pathology

• no joint damage after attacks

Clinical manifestations

• sudden attacks of arthritis
• arthragia
• joint effeusion
• disability
• generally only one joint involved
• interval between recurrent attacks is variable
• duration of attacks is also variable

Laboratory

• synovial fluid analysis generally normal
• ESR or serum CRP may be elevated
• rheumatoid factor & cyclic citrullinated peptide antibody may be elevated in a subset of patients likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis

Complications

• development of rheumatoid arthritis

Differential diagnosis

• gout
• new onset rheumatoid arthritis

Management

• symtomatic
