relative hypoglycemia

Etiology

• months of continuous hyperglycemia (plasma glucose > 200 mg/dL)

Pathology

• occurs when a patient experiences symptoms of hypoglycemia with a plasma glucose level > 70 mg/dL
• may occur with plasma glucose as high as 120 mg/dL
• hyperadrenergic effects
• effect is diminishes with sustained improved glycemic control
