Etiology
- months of continuous hyperglycemia (plasma glucose > 200 mg/dL)
Pathology
- occurs when a patient experiences symptoms of hypoglycemia with a plasma glucose level > 70 mg/dL
- may occur with plasma glucose as high as 120 mg/dL
- hyperadrenergic effects
- effect is diminishes with sustained improved glycemic control
