Etiology

  • exposure to coal dust

Pathology

  • deposition of coal particles in the lung
  • initial (early) phase of pneumoconiosis

Clinical manifestations

  • asymptomatic

Radiology

  • chest X-ray every 5 years to assess progression
  • more frequent chest rays as patients become symptomatic
