sucroferric oxyhydroxide (Velphoro)

Indications

• hyperphosphatemia in patients on hemodialysis

Dosage

• start: 500 mg PO TID with each meal
  • tablets must be chewed not swallowed whole
  • tablets may be crushed
  • patients typically need 3 or 4 tablets/day
• maximum: 1000 mg TID

Tabs: 500 mg (chewable)

Adverse effects

• diarrhea (6-24%)
• dicolored feces (12-16%)
• nausea

Drug interactions

• coadministration of levothyroxine is contraindicated
• coadministration of vitamin D is contraindicated
• use caution with coadministation of alendronate or doxycycline
