confidence interval (CI)

Introduction

An interval indicating numerically the range of uncertainty for the probability of a particular outcome.

As the width of the confidence interval decreases, the precision of a measurement or analysis increases.

Typically, the usage relates to the 95% confidence interval, i.e. the range of values for which you can be 95% confident that a particular value will lie within.

For example, reference intervals for laboratory tests are generally 95% confidence intervals.

Confidence intervals provide more information than p values because they present a plausible range of an event, allowing assessment of clinical significance[1]
