Function
- broad activity as an NMP kinase
- AMP & dAMP are the preferred substrates of all tested NMPs,
- CMP & dCMP are also good substrates
- IMP can be phosphorylated, but to a much lesser extent
- adenylate & cytidylate can serve as phosphate acceptors
- interacts with COIL (via C-terminus)
Structure
- belongs to the adenylate kinase family, AK6 subfamily
Compartment
- nucleus, nucleoplasm. nucleus, Cajal body
- widespread diffuse nucleoplasmic distribution
- not detected in nucleoli
- detected in Cajal bodies but not in all cells
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=3
Notes
- isoform 1 & isoform 2 are produced by the same gene but are translated from different initiation codons & use different reading frames so they display no identity in their protein sequences
- this arrangement is conserved in mammals but these proteins are produced by separate genes in non-mammalian species
