benzoate/phenylacetate (Ammonul)

Indications

• treatment of hyperammonemia

Dosage

• loading dose 500 mg/kg (250 mg/kg of each drug) infused over 90 minutes
• maintenace 500 mg/kg/day

Adverse effects

• particulate matter may impact the safe use of Ammonul

Mechanism of action

• phenylacetate combines with glutamine to form phenylacetylglutamine which is excreted in the urine
• benzoate combines with glycine to form hippurate which is excreted in the urine
• reduced influx into the urea cycle
