Introduction

Naphazoline 0.025% plus pheniramine 0.3%

Indications

• temporary relief of ocular congestion
  • red eye

Contraindications

narrow-angle glaucoma

pregnancy-category C

Dosage

1 drop BID-QID PRN

Solution: 15 mL.

Pharmacokinetics

• vasoconstriction within 10 minutes
• duration of action: 2-6 hours

Adverse effects

• transient burning
• stinging
• mydriasis
• excessive use may result in irritation & rebound hyperemia

Mechanism of action

• decongestant (vasoconstriction of conjunctival blood vessels)
• direct stimulation of alpha adrenergic receptors with little or no effect on beta adrenergic receptors
