Introduction
foods that are specially formulated for dietary management of conditions that have distinctive nutritional needs that cannot be met by normal diet alone
a medical food must meet the following criteria:
- not a naturally occurring foodstuff
- specifically formulated for oral or tube feeding
- labeled for the dietary management of a specific medical disorder, with distinctive nutritional requirements
- intended for use under medical supervision
claims made by manufacturer's of medical foods are not reviewed by the FDA
