Introduction

foods that are specially formulated for dietary management of conditions that have distinctive nutritional needs that cannot be met by normal diet alone

a medical food must meet the following criteria:

    • not a naturally occurring foodstuff
    • specifically formulated for oral or tube feeding
    • labeled for the dietary management of a specific medical disorder, with distinctive nutritional requirements
    • intended for use under medical supervision

claims made by manufacturer's of medical foods are not reviewed by the FDA
