finger tapping test

Procedure

• ask the patient to rapidly & simultaneously tap the index fingers against a hard surface

Interpretation

• in a patient with subtle hemiparesis, finger tapping is slower in the hemiparetic hand (opposite in side to the brain lesion)
• with Parkinsonism, the amplitude of the tapping decreases, the rate of tapping may increase
