severity of dependence scale (SDS)

Introduction

SDS contains five items, all of which are explicitly concerned with psychological components of dependence.

These items are specifically concerned with impaired control over drug taking & with preoccupation & anxieties about drug use.

Answers to following 5 questions scored 0-3.

A score of 3 is most affirmative; 0 is negative.

Over the last 3 months:

  • Did you ever think your use of [drug] was out of control?
  • Did the prospect of missing a [drug dose] make you very anxious or worried?
  • Did you worry about your use of [drug]?
  • Did you wish you could stop [drug]?
  • How difficult would you find it to stop or go without [drug]?
Different cut-off scores:
  • one for adults; SDS score of 3
  • other for adolescents; SDS score of 4
