• generally 1st position in tRNA anticodon
• position of tRNA anticodon that allows non-Watson-Crick base pairing between nucleotide in tRNA-mRNA binding
• 4 main wobble base pairs are
  • guanine-uracil
  • inosine-uracil
  • inosine-adenine
  • inosine-cytosine
• thermodynamic stability of a wobble base pair is comparable to that of a Watson-Crick base pair
• wobble base pairs are essential for translation of mRNA
• most organisms have < 45 tRNAs, yet there are 64 possible codons (trinucleotide sequences) in mRNA; 3 are stop codons
