vaginal septum

Etiology

• incomplete or disorder fusion of the Mullerian ducts during embryogenesis

Pathology

• a partition with the vagina
  • longitudinal: separating vagina into two potential spaces
  • transverse:
    • blocks outflow from the vagina interial to the septum
    • blocks mentrual flow
    • accumulation of menstrual debris behind the septum is termed cryptomenorrhea

Clinical manifestations

• dyspareunia
• obstruction in labor
• amenorrhea

Management

• surgical resection
