stratum granulosum (granular layer)

Introduction

A layer* of flattened cells just under the stratum corneum of the epidermis & above the stratum spinosum. The cells in this layer contain basophilic granules of keratohyalin.

* Layers of epidermis (from the surface) include:

• stratum corneum (keratin {horny} layer)
• stratum lucidum (clear layer) <palms & soles>
• stratum granulosum (granular layer)
• stratum spinosum (prickle cell layer)
• stratum basale (basal cell layer)
