aura (prodrome)

Introduction

The subjective sensation or phenomenon that precedes & heralds the onset of a paroxysmal event (deja vu).

Etiology

• epilepsy (seizure)
• migraine
• syncope

Clinical manifestations

• epileptic seizure aura variable, < 1 minute
• migraine aura of variable length, 15-30 minutes
  • migraine prodrome is the earliest phase of a migraine preceding headache onset, characterised by non-aura symptoms (see migraine)
• syncope aura
  • light-headedness, sweating
