Somatic sensory nucleus of CN 8.

• paired nuclei located in posterior medulla lateral to the vestibular nucleus
• receives sensory input (hearing) from ear via the spiral ganglion

• apparently, paired anterior & posterior cochlear nuclei, but considered here as one.
