Origin

• ophthalmic nerve (CN V-1)

Innervation

• sensory fibers to the lateral part of the upper eyelid, conjunctiva & lacrimal gland
• secretomotor fibers from the facial nerve (CN VII) supply the lacrimal gland (via a communicating branch from the zygomaticotemporal nerve)

Course

• runs superior to the lateral rectus muscle
