• forms a part of a portocaval anastomoses
• many of the esophageal veins draining the cervical (superior) part of the esophageal venous plexus drain into the superior vena cava.

Tributaries

• both surfaces of the cardia of the stomach
• cardiac (inferior) part of the esophagus via an esophageal vein

Empties into

portal vein

Pathology

• left gastric vein may be subject to formation of gastric varices with portal hypertension
