Anastomoses
- forms a part of a portocaval anastomoses
- many of the esophageal veins draining the cervical (superior) part of the esophageal venous plexus drain into the superior vena cava.

- both surfaces of the cardia of the stomach
- cardiac (inferior) part of the esophagus via an esophageal vein

Pathology
- left gastric vein may be subject to formation of gastric varices with portal hypertension
