Introduction

Classification presumptive. Dust mites are an important respiratory allergen.

Epidemiology

• require high humidity
• found in all human habitations
• most significant habititat is bedding & fabric-upholstered furniture
• feed on mold & epidermal scale shed by humans

Laboratory

• Dermatophagoides IgE in serum

Management

• environmental control
  • removal of rugs to reduce mite density
  • frequent vacuuming
  • discontinue use of humidifier
  • wash bedding in hot water
• immunotherapy with mite extracts
