Na+ retention

Introduction

Retention rather than elimination of Na+ in the urine.

Etiology

• hyponatremia
• diminished osmolality
• increased mineralocorticoid activity

Pathology

• may retain free water with Na+ leading to edema &/or hypervolemia.
