Introduction
Commonly found, non-pathogenic commensal species. Trophozoites:
- measure 5-12 um, generally 8-10 um
- motile on wet mounts
- nucleus not visible on unstained preparations
- cytoplasm may contain bacteria Cysts:
- generally spherical in shape
- 5-10 um in diameter, generally 6-8 um
- 4 nuclei in mature cysts
- immature cysts with 1 or 2 nuclei often seen
- glycogen is generally diffuse
- chromatoid bodies: elongated bars
