SV40 virus

Pathology

• monkey virus, isolated from the brains of 2 patients with progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML).
• SV40 virus causes tumors in hamsters.
• contains SV40 large T-antigen

Clinical manifestations

• infection occurs > 12 months after renal transplantation &/or intensive immunosuppression

Laboratory

• Papova virus SV 40 antibody in serum
