Epidemiology
- transmitted through mosquitoes
- travelers to New Guinea, remote northwestern Australia or southeastern Australia
- the Murray valley is in eastern Australia
Clinical manifestations
- most infections are asymptomatic
- some people develop mild disease
- encephalitis can occur
- confusion, sleepiness, aphasia, lack of coordination
- rare cases of long-term disability or death can occur
