Introduction
Etiologic agent of respiratory infections in children.
Epidemiology
- 80% of infections occur between February & May[6]
- high rate of infection in infants 0-5 months of age[6]
- infective for primates, but not birds[4]
- 6% of inpatients[8]
- 7% of outpatients
- 7% of emergency department patients
- 1% of asymptomatic controls[8]
Pathology
- produces pathology similar to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)
- spectrum of disease from rhinitis to severe bronchitis & pneumonia
Genetics
- related to an avian virus
Clinical manifestations
- 12% if children with lower respiratory tract infection
- 15% if children with upper respiratory tract infection
- 1% of asymptomatic children
Laboratory
- isolation from nasopharyngeal aspirates
- metapneumovirus antigen
- RT-PCR for metapneumovirus RNA
- metapneumovirus IgG in serum
- nearly 100% of adults have antibody to MPV
- see ARUP consult[7]
