Introduction
A terpene alcohol obtained from peppermint oil or synthesized from inorganic compounds.
Uses
- antipruritic agent
- topical anesthetic
- topical agent for upper respiratory tract infection
- along with menthol & eucalyptus oil, component of Vicks Vaporub
- in nasal spraysm cough drops & inhalers
- as a flavoring agent
Adverse effects
- although menthol is preceived as increased airflow across the nostrils, nasal airflow resistance is acutally increased within a minute of menthol application & this effect persists for > 3 hours
- inhalation of menthol may result in aspiration, apnea, laryngoconstriction, nausea, ataxia, confusion, euphoria
Mechanism of action
- binds to a receptor causing intracellular influx of Ca+2
- responsible for the feeling of congestion relief in Vicks VapoRub
