Introduction
Tradename: Kaopectate*
* has been reformulated to contain bismuth subsalicylate[3]
Indications
adjunctive therapy for management of diarrhea
Dosage
- 30 mg PO after each loose bowel movement
- up to 7 doses/day.
- 15 mL/dose if 6-12 yo
- 7.5 mL/dose if 3-5 yo.
Liquid: 600 mg/15 mL Elimination: Not absorbed.
Mechanism of action
- decreases intestinal motility
- enhances absorption of intestinal fluid
- eventually to be withdrawn from market due to lack of effectiveness[3]
