parathyroid hyperplasia

Etiology

• sporadic
• MEN1 or MEN2A

Pathology

• usually all 4 glands enlarged, but may be asymetrical with inferior glands larger
• total weight usually 1-3 grams

Microscopic pathology

• usually chief cell hyperplasia, may have oxyphil cell hyperplasia
• loss of adipose tissue
• usually no rim of compressed normal tissue
• may be nodular
• may have mitotic activity

Differential diagnosis

• parathyroid adenoma
