Function
- catalyzes the cross-linking of proteins & the conjugation of polyamines to proteins
- contributes to formation of the cornified cell envelope of keratinocytes
protein glutamine + alkylamine <--> protein N(5)-alkylglutamine + NH3
Cofactor: binds 1 Ca+2 per subunit (putative)
Structure
- belongs to the transglutaminase superfamily transglutaminase family
Compartment
- cytoplasm
- associated with intermediate filaments
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=2
Expression
- expressed in foreskin keratinocytes
- induced by tetradecanoylphorbolacetate (TPA) & Ca+2 in NHEK cells
Pathology
- defects in TGM5 are a cause of peeling skin syndrome acral type
