Function
- mediates endocytosis of plasma glycoproteins to which the terminal sialic acid residue on their complex carbohydrate moieties has been removed (asialoglycoprotein)
- the receptor recognizes terminal galactose & N-acetylgalactosamine units
- Ca+2 is required for ligand binding
- after ligand binding, the receptor-ligand complex is internalized & transported to a sorting organelle, where receptor & ligand are disassociated
- the receptor then returns to the cell membrane surface
- the functioning ligand-binding unit of this receptor is thought to be at least a dimer
- interacts with LASS2
Structure
contains 1 C-type lectin domain
Compartment
membrane
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=3
Expression
- expressed exclusively in hepatic parenchymal cells
