- sequence-specific RNA-binding protein
- regulates translation & mRNA stability by binding the 3' untranslated regions (UTRs) of mRNA targets
- role in proliferation & self-renewal of stem cells (putative)
- binds in a sequence-specific manner to the 3'UTR of some mRNAs
- pumilio repeats mediate the association with RNA by packing together to form a right-handed superhelix that approximates a half donut- number as well as the specific sequence of repeats determine specificity for target mRNAs
