Introduction
Unmyelinated fibers 1 um in diameter.
Slow conduction: 1 meter/second.
Includes:
- sensory fibers:
- nociceptor (pain) signals (except skin), temperature sensation.
- C-fibers bifurcate upon entering the spinal cord with branches of these axons ascending & descending for a few segments of part of the tract of Lissauer, while axon collaterals synapse on stalk cell interneurons in layer II of the dorsal horn of the spinal cord (substantia gelatinosa)
- C-fibers release glutamate in addition to substance P
- autonomic postganglionic fibers
